HC scraps writ challenging MPs’ oath-taking

Supreme Court of Bangladesh. BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe High Court (HC) has scrapped a writ which challenged the legality of oath taking by lawmakers elected in the Dec 30 polls before dissolving the 10th parliament.

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order on Monday (Feb 18).

AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Sakib Mahbub moved the petition while Additional Attorney General Murad Reza, Md Momtaz Uddin Fakir, Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Raju represented the State among other counsels.  

On Jan 8, Speaker of the House, Chief Election Commissioner and cabinet secretary were served with a legal notice challenging the legality of oath taking of lawmakers for the 11th National Parliament.

Barrister Khokon sent the notice on behalf of Supreme Court lawyer Md Taherul Islam Towheed.

Upon receiving no response from the defendants, Khokon on Jan 15 filed the writ with the High Court.
