RMG workers-police clash leaves 30 injured

RMG workers clashed with police in Savar on Wednesday (Jan 9)Thirty people have been injured in a clash between ready-made garments workers and police in Savar.
Apparel workers took to the streets for the fourth day on Wednesday (Jan 9), blocking several roads including the Dhaka-Aricha highway.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in the highway’s Ulail area.
Garments workers said that they blocked the highway in the Ulail highways area when the industrial police started to disperse the crowd. Workers attacked the police with stones and police in turn threw tear gas shells at them.
Police later on used water cannons and charged at them to disperse the protestors and were able to bring the situation under control after four hours.
Ashulia-based Industrial Police 1 unit’s Director Sana Saminur Rahman said that the workers had blocked 12 spots on the highway.
He added that during the clash, 30 people were injured including policemen. A total of 15 factories have announced temporary shutdown at the face of unrest.
On Tuesday (Jan 7), a similar clash between RMG factory workers and police has left one dead at Savar. Moreover 32 workers were injured in several clashed and amongst them three were shot who are undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital.
