Workers are seen demonstrating in the capital’s Azampur on Monday (Jan 7).Garment workers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensing highway for the second consecutive day demanding arrears and rise in minimum wages
The workers took to the streets around 10:30am on Monday (Jan 7) in the capital’s Uttara, police said.
They then blocked the vehicular movement on the highway, promoting traffic congestion on both sides of the road.
Workers were seen demonstrating in Uttara’s Azampur, Rajlakhsmi, Dakkhinkhan and Abdullapur areas.
Chases and counter-chases between police and workers were reported in Dakkhinkhan area.
Police have talked to the workers in an effort to clear the roads, Additional Commissioner (Airport zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mizanur Rahman told Bangla Tribune.
The police official, however, claimed the workers are not aware of their demands. “They can’t clearly tell us why they are demonstrating.”
“Talks with the factory owners and the apparel trading bodies' leaders are underway on the matter,” said Rahman.
On Sunday (Jan 6), the garment workers blockaded the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway for five hours pressing their demands.
The workers called off the blockaded after the factory owners assured them of implementing the new wage board.
