The High Court has asked the Election Commission (EC) to accept nomination papers of five BNP candidates, who had their nomination papers rejected in appeal to EC.

The High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik Al Jalil passed the order on Sunday (Dec 9).

EC rejected nomination papers of the five BNP aspirants as they are all sitting mayors at their respective municipalities.

The candidates are Amzad Hossain  Sarker for Nilphamari-4, Syed Jahangir Alam for Dinajpur-3, Fahmid Faisal Chowdhury for Nilphamari-3, Nazmul Haque for Nagaon-5 and Towhidul Islam for Panchagrah-1.

Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal moved for the petitioners while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.

“The court has said it’s not possible to determine, without a full hearing of the rule, whether the post of mayor is a position of profit or not,” Kajal told the media after the hearing.
