Two persons had been carrying out elaborate deception by impersonating an army colonel and major. By promising jobs, they took more than Tk 5 million from 12 persons. Then the two became traceless.
However, using latest technology, the two swindlers, Masud Parvez, 46, and his accomplice Saiful Islam were arrested.
Senior assistant commissioner of detective branch, Moharram Ali, said, “On May 11 last, the two con men presenting themselves as army officers, promised a person called Omar Faruk to ensure a job for him at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, BRTA and took Tk 400,000 from him.”
In this way, they took another tk 1.6 million from others, added the officer.
As a strategy for deception, they never took the whole demanded amount at first in order to create a sense of trust among the victims.
The unsuspecting victims were even given appointment letters and when they presented them at the cantonment, the papers were proved to be false.
Presenting lucrative job offers in the army and other government services, they took around Tk 5.5 million from 12 persons.
