NSI (National Security Intelligence) have seized 870kgs of New Psychotropic Substance (NPS), a new kind of narcotic at the Dhaka airport on Friday.
On a tip-off, NSI men seized the narcotic, also known as 'khat', from the foreign post office.
An airport official said that 49 cartons containing the illegal substance came in an Air India flight from Ethiopia.
The boxes raised suspicion and were kept under surveillance before opening those in presence of personnel from various agencies, he added.
They found all the boxes containing ‘green tea’-like substance, later identified as Ethiopian drug khat, which has recently found its way into Bangladeshi black market.
Law enforcement agencies have seized over a 1000 kgs of the same narcotic in the past four months.
On Sept 19, police held two men for possession of 395 kgs of NPS from the capital’s Uttara.
