The Supreme Court Bar Association has urged to open a judicial inquiry in to the police action on students and job-seekers demanding reforms to quotas in public service.
Its President Jainul Abedin’s call came during a media briefing on Tuesday.
“The association is concerned over the attacks on demonstrators by the law-enforcing agencies and ruling party’s student affiliate. Police used teargas, rubber bullets and batons at a peaceful demonstration while armed goons unleashed a reign of terror on the Dhaka University campus,” he said.
Describing protesters’ demands as justified, the pro-BNP lawyer said that the government “is wasting time for so-called discussions”.
A BNP vice-chairman, Abedin said the police action and arrest of hundreds of students and job-seekers constituted to human rights violations.
“The Supreme Court Bar Association demands an inquiry headed by a top court judge to bring those responsible to justice,” he said.
