Thousands of protesters have blocked the key intersection of Shahbagh in Dhaka demanding reforms of quota system.Job-seekers and students have blocked a key intersection in Dhaka with their demonstration calling for a reform in the quota system in government jobs.
Thousands of protesters have blocked the capital’s Shahbagh intersection around 2:30pm after taking out a procession on the Dhaka University campus, said witnesses.
The demonstration has shut traffic through the intersection and creating long tailbacks of vehicles on the roads around Shahbagh.
Protests demanding reform of the quota system have been continuing for quite some time. Last month, police broke up their march to the Secretariat when several arrests were maded.
“The prime minister said that any seat left vacant after a quota would be filled based on merit. But then the public administration ministry says those seats would be filled by another quota,” demonstrator Ujjwal Mia told Bangla Tribune
“Parliament is now in session. We want parliament to announce quota reforms in this session. The demonstration will continue until an announcement comes,” he said.
