The High Court (HC) granted a six-month bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a defamation case filed in Narail for making derogatory remarks on the number o the martyrs of the Liberation War and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The HC bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Kashefa Hussain passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Khaleda seeking bail in the case.
Khaleda’s legal counsel Ehsanur Rahman told Bangla Tribune that being denied bail from the Narail District and Sessions on Aug 5, they moved to the HC with the bail plea.
On Dec 21, 2015, in a discussion in the capital Khaleda raised questions about the actual number of Liberation War martyrs.
She also alleged Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (not mentioning the name) longed for the prime ministers' post of Pakistan; he didn't want a sovereign Bangladesh.
Reacting over the Khaleda's remarks, Raihan Farooque Imam of Narail filed a case with the Cognisance Court on Dec 24, 2015.
