The government has provided evidences on BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman British citizenship, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said.
“As a British citizen, Tarique has opened a company in the UK and become its director,” Alam told the House on Sunday.
The junior minister said, “Tarique had registered a private firm, White and Blue Consultants Limited in the UK as a British citizen. Four months later, his status of citizenship was changed to a Bangladeshi.”
“According to the Companies House website - the UK regulator of limited companies – Tarique is an active director of the firm.
“So, we can say that he has dual citizenship and he surrendered his Bangladesh passport. If he has a UK passport and registered the firm as a British citizen we can’t call him a Bangladesh citizen,” Alam said.
In February this year, Shahriar Alam claimed that Tarique had surrendered his Bangladesh passport and citizenship to the British government for asylum, which the BNP vehemently denied.
Shahriar shared photos of Tarique’s passport in British custody on his Facebook account which was subsequently hacked and the photos removed.
Later, he said that Tarique’s passport validity expired years ago and has not been renewed since.
Tarique has been residing in London for the past 10 years.
