DUCSU Vice President Nurul Haque Nur speaking to the media after the first executive meeting of the newly elected panel on Saturday (Mar 23). BANGLA TRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainTerming the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) polls as ‘questionable’, its newly elected Vice President Nurul Haque Nur opposed nominating Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as a lifetime DUCSU member.

Nur expressed his reservation during the first DUCSU executive body meeting on Saturday (Mar 23), when Hasina was nominated a lifetime member by the newly elected panel.

International Affairs Secretary Shahrima Tanjima Orni tabled the proposal in the meeting before it was raised by DUCSU General Secretary Golam Rabbani for further discussion.

According to Rabbani, 24 leaders of the panel voiced their support for the proposal while Nur, the vice president was the only one who opposed.

However, Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) Joint Convener Rashed Khan claimed Social Welfare Secretary Akter Hossain was also against the motion.

Emerging from the meeting, VP Nur told the media, “We had discussions about nominating the honorable prime minister as a lifetime member; however, we didn’t reach any conclusion on the matter.”

Nur said he doesn’t want to see the prime minister honored with lifetime DUCSU membership from the premises of a controversial election.

“A section of students including me stand by our stance that the polls were questionable. I don’t think the prime minister’s lifetime membership should be declared from such a position,” Nur said explaining his position.

Nur also claimed that a few other members agreed with this notion, which, however, was refuted by Rabbani, who said, “It’s only the vice president who expressed his reservations.”
