Jatiya Party lawmakers take oath

Jatiya Party (JaPa)The lawmakers from Jatiya Party, elected in the recently-held 11th Parliamentary Election, took the oath on Thursday (Jan 3).
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath to the Jatiya Party Member of Parliaments around 12pm without the presence of the party chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
Ershad, who has been elected from Rangpur-4 constituency, will take the oath at 3pm on Thursday (Jan 3).
Earlier, the oath taking ceremony held at the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat.
The ceremony began around 11am in the Oath Room of the Parliament Complex, after Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury arrived at the parliament building.
Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury first took oath as per the rules of procedure and put signature on the letter of oath at the ceremony.
Senior Secretary Zafar Ahmed Khan conducted the oath-taking ceremony which began with recitation from the holy Quran.
The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday published the results of the 11th general elections and issued gazette notification containing the names and addresses of candidates of 298 constituencies.
As per the parliamentary practice, lawmakers of the winning side – in this case, the Awami League – took their oaths; to be followed by the rest of the MPs-elect. However, no MPs-elect from opposition BNP or Jatiya Oikya Front were seen in the oath room.
The polling was held between 8am and 4pm peacefully amid a festivity in 299 seats out of total 300 on Sunday (Dec 30) as voting in Gaibandha-3 constituency was suspended due to death of a candidate on Dec 22.
However, the results of Brahmanbaria-2 constituency was postponed as voting in three centers of the constituency was suspended.
According to the polls results, Awami League bagged 259 seats, HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party secured 20 seats while BNP got just five seats.
Workers Party bagged three seats while Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal two seats, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh two seats and Tariqat Federation one seat.
Gano Forum bagged two seats while Manju-led Jatiya Party (JP) one seat and independent candidates got three seats.
