'High level visit from Russia is expected in coming days' FILE PHOTOA high-level visit from Russia is expected in the coming days, says Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque.
“We want to strengthen the relationship and take it to newer heights in the coming days,” he said at a seminar on Bangladesh-Russia relations at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies Wednesday.
Bangladesh-Russia Friendship Society organised the seminar.
Terming the Dhaka-Moscow bondage mature, he said we have strong collaboration in New York, Geneva and recently in the Netherlands on nuclear and hard politics issue.
“This is not essential we take the same position, but we understand each other quite better,” he said.
When we don’t have a similar position, we explain to Russia about our position and they understand, the foreign secretary said.
About the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Russia in 2013, he said a number of agreements were signed to improve the bilateral relationship.
He said energy, defence and trade and investment are the three main pillars of bilateral cooperation.
Apart from the nuclear energy cooperation, Russian company Gazprom is actively engaged in energy production in Bangladesh, he added.
The government is negotiating with Gazprom to award two fields for gas exploration, the foreign secretary said.
Bangladesh procured military hardware and it signed an agreement on defence cooperation.
Russian Ambassador Alexander Ignatov said several agreements signed years ago need to be updated.
In the coming years, we have massive plans, he said.
