As the election is approaching, Rohingyas who sought asylum in Australia are travelling to Dhaka with fake visa.
In the last two weeks, about 20 such Rohingyas were detained at the Shahjalal Airport and four of them have already been deported.
According to a report published in Australian media house SBS, the victims paid 150 Australian dollars to brokers to get fake stamp visa and after arriving in Dhaka, they realised that the visas they carried was invalid.
The report said a gang based in western Sydney and Adelaide are believed to be involved in the alleged scam.
The victims have Australian Convention Travel Document (CTD) which a certificate of identity. It is issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, given to individuals recognised as refugees who reside in Australia.
When contacted with Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia, Mohammad Sufiur Rahman told Bangla Tribune, “We are aware of it.”
After the Rohingyas were detained at the airport, four or five Rohingyas who got fake stamp visa contacted with the high commission and we gave them genuine visa cancelling the invalid one.
Immigration Department in Bangladesh are investigating how the issue and after getting the report and policy direction, we will take the next course of action, he said.
Sufiur Rahman said, the high commission stopped issuing stamp visa since February and introduced machine-readable visa, which cannot be forged.
