The Election Commission offices in Dhaka`s Agargaon. File PhotoSeven candidates of the BNP and one of the ruling Awami League have been declared disqualified to contest the 11th Parliamentary Election from 15 constituencies in Dhaka on loan default charges.
Dhaka Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer (RO) KM Ali Azam scrapped their candidacy on Sunday (Dec 2) after a day-long nomination scrutiny.
Azam said, “We’ve suspended several candidatures on ground of making little mistakes and most of these have been solved.
“The candidates, however, can appeal to Election Commission (EC) against their disqualification for candidacy within three days,” the RO added.
The appeal process will begin from on Monday (Dec 4) and continue till Wednesday (Dec 5).
As many as 161 candidates in Dhaka came out successful in the RO’s scrutiny with another 52 being disqualified to contest the Dec 30 polls.
Russell Aziz of Dhaka-17 seat was the lone AL’s candidate, who filed nomination scrutiny on charge of loan default with several banks including Sonali and Agrani banks and financial institution Lanka Bangla.
