Bangladeshi migrant workers. FILE PHOTODhaka is constantly engaging with Kuala Lumpur to have a healthy labour market in the country, says the Bangladesh high commissioner.
“Even today through online about 20 Malaysian companies submit their demand for Bangladeshis workers,” said Md Shahidul Islam, who is working there for the last three and half years.
On Tuesday, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad said it wants to increase competition among recruiting agencies to streamline the labour market.
The decision has a direct impact on Bangladesh as only 10 recruitment agencies are allowed to send workers for Malaysian companies which continue to submit their demand for Bangladeshis.
Shahidul said the market is open and still the workers are coming to Malaysia.
On Mahathir’s remarks made on Tuesday, he said, “We all are on the same page of having labour-friendly market here.”
He said both the countries signed a memorandum of understanding which regulates recruitment process from Bangladesh.
“We have joint working group which will sit and discuss about the issue,” he added.
It is a continuous process and they are engaging with the authorities here to make things better under the changing scenario, he said.
The high commissioner alleged that rumours have a negative impact on the market, which effect everybody.
Citing example, he said few months back there was a media report that Malaysia closed down its market.
“Immediately I checked with ‘recruitment app’ which showed on that day 33 Malaysian companies submitted their demand for Bangladeshi workers.”
