Rupa murder case: Four sentenced to death

Jakia Sultana RupaA court today sentenced four people to death in a case filed for killing law student Jakia Sultana Rupa after gang-rape on a moving bus at Madhupur Upazila of the district in August.
Acting Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Abul Monshur Mia delivered the verdict on Monday (Feb 12) morning.
The death row convicts are bus driver Habibur (45), and three helpers Shamim (26), Akram (35), and Jahangir (35).
The court also sentenced the supervisor of the bus, Safar alias Gendu, to seven years rigorous imprisonment and fined Taka 1 lakh, said Anwarul Islam, inspector of the court.
Convicted Bus WorkersRupa was gang-raped in a moving bus of ‘Chhoa Paribahan’ and murdered when travelling to Mymensingh from Bogra on August 25, 2017. Her body was dumped in Modhupur Upazila of the district.
Following post-mortem, she was buried at the Tangail town central graveyard as an unclaimed body. Later, the victim's brother identified her seeing her photograph published in a newspaper on August 28, 2017.
On the same day, police arrested the five accused. Later, they gave their confessional statement before the court.
On August 31, police exhumed the body of Rupa and handed it over to her family for burial.
Police pressed charges against the convicts on October 25 last year.
The Judge after examining 32 witnesses and evidence found them guilty and announced the judgment in presence of them.
