The general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit, SM Abu Sufian Chanchal has resigned from his post amid allegations of extortion.
“Chanchal tendered his resignation on Wednesday (Nov 6)," BCL Acting-General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya told Bangla Tribune.
Whether Chanchal's resignation would be accepted, is yet to decide, Lekhak added before declining to disclose the details on the matter.
BCL Office Secretary Ahsan Habib said he forwarded the resignation letter to the top leaders saying "Chanchal may step down for personal causes."
"A press statement would be issued if any decision comes forth,” he added.
BCL JU unit President Jowel Rana, however, claimed he was unaware of the matter saying the central committee hasn't informed him on the matter either.
Chanchal could not be reached for comment.
On Aug 23, a national daily ran a report stating that JU Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam has distributed Tk 10 million among three groups of the BCL JU unit on Aug 9.
The money allegedly came from an ongoing development project of the university worth 14.45 billion. Of the 10 million of the three groups, Sufian received Tk 2.5 million, according to the report.
