Rayhan RaineThe spokesperson for “Jahangirnagar Against Corruption”, Professor Raihan Raine of the philosophy department has said that there is enough evidence of misdeeds against VC Farzana Islam.

The prime minister has said on Thursday (Nov 7) that evidence against corruption has to be produced; false accusations will result in punishment.

Professor Raine said: “We have been demanding an investigation from the beginning; during talks with the university administration, the VC decided against investigation because if a probe had been ordered she would have had to leave her post.”

There is plenty of evidence of graft, especially confessions made at the media; in addition, the news of financial irregularities printed in the media is enough proof, said Professor Raiyan.

“If the existing facts are analysed impartially the financial malpractices of the VC will be proved.”

There are allegations of tender manipulation of a development work worth Tk. 14.45 billion, tender hijacking and partisan selection of bidders against the VC.

Jahangirnagar University campus has been rocked by protests for three months over allegations of corruption against VC Farzana Islam.

On Tuesday (Nov 5), protesting teachers and students came under attack in which 8 teachers plus 25 others were injured. After this incident, the university was closed indefinitely and students asked to vacate halls. The administration also imposed bans on rallies, processions and meetings. But defying the restrictions, the student movement is going on.
