The incident was reported from near the banks of River Naf early on Friday (Oct 18), confirmed Teknaf-2 BGB chief Foysal Hossain.
The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Abul Hashim and 19-year old Nur Kamal from the Kutupalong camp at Ukhiya.
BGB claims that both the men were yaba traders and were brining in a consignment of the contraband drug from Myanmar.
He said that a BGB team took position at the scene based on a tip off that the traders have entered the area through the river channel.
“When they were told to stop the boat, two traders tried to escape. They opened fire on BGB and we fired back in self defence,” he added.
Hasan said that after the gunfight, the two men were found in a bullet-ridden state and taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.
“The doctors there referred them to Cox’s Bazar Hospital where the on-call doctors declared him dead,” he said.
He said that 50,000 tablets of contraband yaba, a local gun, two rounds of ammunition and a sharp weapon was seized from the seized from the scene.
In the last two years 175 people have been killed in the anti-drug raids at Cox’s Baxar’s Ukhiya and Teknaf districts amongst which 49 are Rohingyas.
