The heroic Daudkandi Highway police Constable Parvez Mia, who received the highest police award for rescuing 20 people from a drowning bus, lost his right foot in an accident.
Surgeons at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) hospital amputated lower portion of Parvez's right leg (from knee to foot) on Tuesday (May 28) afternoon.
Top surgeons sat at a meeting and decided on the amputation, after the initial surgery on his leg had proved to be ineffective, and this hampered his overall blood circulation.
Confirming the matter to Bangla Tribune Parvez’s younger brother Mohiuddin said the family was initially worried but now Parvez is in better condition.
On Monday (May 27) afternoon, a covered van lost control and ran over his right foot in front of Jamaldi Bus stand on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in the Gajaria upazila of Munshiganj.
Following the accident locals rescued Parvez to the Gajaria Upazila Health Complex. Later he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and then to NITOR.
On Jul 7, 2017, a bus skidded off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch at Cumilla's Gouripur crossing on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.
Constable Parvez who was on duty at that moment, broke the windows of the bus and rescued 20 passengers including a child, who were stuck in the drowning vehicle.
Parvez's heroic effort made him a social media sensation later police honoured him with Bangladesh Police Medal.
He was currently assigned as the surveillance in-charge for the Meghna Bridge project.
