A fire has ripped through 30 houses and a mosque in Cox's Bazar's Kutupalong Rohingya camp.

The fire broke out at the Kutupalong Rohingya camp No 5 in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, around 12:30pm on Wednesday (Apr 24).

Two Rohingyas were injured while trying to douse the fire. They were taken to the local Red Crescent hospital for treatment.

"Two units of the Ukhiya Fire Service rushed to the scene and put out the flames,”, Ukhiya Fire Station In-Charge Emdauld Haque told Bangla Tribune.

"Two Rohingyas were injured while trying to douse the fire. We suspect that the fire originated from one of the gas cylinders used at the camp," he said before adding, “A total of 30 houses and a mosque were gutted by the fire."

Md Abdur Rahim, a leader of the Rohingya camp, said, "We saw thick clouds of smoke coming from the camp. The residents here tried to douse the fire.

Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nikaruzzaman Chowdhury said that firefighters responded as soon as they were informed and brought it under control.

"Luckily no major damage was reported due to the fire. We have repeatedly warned the Rohingyas about the use of gas cylinders," he added.
