Student dies after being 'pushed out' of moving bus

Md Wasim was a fourth-year Biotechnology and Genetics Engineering student of Sylhet Agricultural University.A Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) student has died after he was allegedly pushed out of a moving bus by the driver’s assistant.
The incident was reported on Saturday (Mar 23) on the Sylhet-Mymensingh Highway in the northeastern district of Moulvibazar.
The victim has been identified as Ghori Md Wasim, a fourth-year Biotechnology and Genetics Engineering student, who hailed from Habiganj district, reports Bangla Tribune’s SAU Correspondent.

The death has sparked protests in the northeastern metropolis of Sylhet with hundreds of SAU students taking to the streets demanding justice for their peer.

After attending a wedding reception in Habiganj, Wasim, along with 10 of his friends, were returning to the campus by a bus operated by ‘Udar Paribahan’, according to Nayan Shubho, an Agriculture faculty student at SAU.

He said that an argument broke out between the students and the driver’s assistant over the fare and at one point, Wasim was pushed out of the moving bus by the helper, when he was ran over by the vehicle.
According to him, one of his friends Rakib Hossain managed to jump off from the speedy bus.
Critically injured Wasim died while being rushed to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in a car while Rakib is being treated at the hospital.
The bus was later seized by Moulvibazar police. However, the driver and his assistant managed to flee.

Protests erupt in Sylhet
Soon after the news of Wasim’s death came, hundreds of SAU students have taken to the streets, blocking the highway near the campus. Traffic remains suspended on the road to enter the metropolitan city. They have announced to demonstrate until the administration takes definite measures.
Students have also attacked and vandalised an ‘Udar Paribahan’ counter at the city’s Kadamtali Bus Terminal.
Wasim’s peers have gathered at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the body has been kept.
Speaking to Bangla Tribune at the hospital, SAU Vice Chancellor Md Matiar Rahman Howlader said it was “not an accident but murder”.
