Suresh Kanti Tongchanga. File PhotoPolice have detained one of the suspects over the murder of Suresh Kanti Tongchanga, a local Awami League leader in Rangamati.

“Suspect— Snehashish Chakma alias Ashish, 43, was detained from the city’s Bonrupa area around 5:30am on Saturday (Mar 23), for his suspected involvement in the murder,” Rangamati Kotwali police OC Md Jahedul Haque said.

Tongchanga, who was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Mar 19 morning, served as the president of Bilaichari upazila Awami League.

Following Saturday’s arrest, OC Haque also said that the arrestee has confessed his involvement in the killing during initial interrogation.

Ashish is the president of Bolpia Adam Businessmen Welfare Association, and is involved with a local political party.

Meanwhile, upazila Jubo League Finance Secretary Monir Hossain filed a case on Saturday accusing 28 people, including the Bilaichhari Upazila Chairman Shuvo Mangal, of murdering Suresh Kanti Tongchanga, Bilaichhari police OC Md Parvez Ali confirmed the matter.
