An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has described as shootout.
The incident was reported from a salt project at Khankardeil village in the district’s Tekanf Upazila early Thursday (Mar 14), said BGB.
The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Nurul Islam.
“Being tipped-off, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area around 4am,” said Major Shariful Islam Jomaddar, acting commanding officer of BGB-2.
“Sensing the presence of law enforcers, a group of drug peddlers opened fire on BGB team. In self defence, BGB had to retaliate which triggered the shootout. After over 10 min of the incident, the drug peddlers managed to flee the scene and Islam’s bullet hit body was found on the spot,” said Jomaddar.
“Islam was rushed to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared him dead,” he added.
“The body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy,” said the BGB member.

The BGB team seized 7,000 yaba tablets and two sharp weapons from the scene.
