BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addresses a rally told the media in the Lalmonirhat on Monday.The government formed after the Dec 30 election does not represent the people, says BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir before reiterating that the MPs-elect from opposition coalition will not join parliament.
“BNP and Jatiya Oikya Front have rejected the 11th general election as it’s proven now it’s not possible to have a fair election under the incumbent administration and this Election Commission. It’s out of the question for us to take oath,” he told the media in the Lalmonirhat on Monday.
“We will not take oath as MPs,” he added.
The BNP leader, who is also the Oikya Front spokesperson, made the remarks after visiting the family of Tojammel Haque, who was stabbed to death at a village near the northern district town on election day.
The 56-year-old was the family welfare affairs secretary of BNP’s local union council unit. He was on his way to cast his vote when he a group of miscreants attacked him.
Mirza Fakhrul was accompanied by a number of Oikya Front leaders, including Abdul Kader Siddique, ASM Abdur Rab and Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, and leaders and activists of BNP during the visit to Tojammel’s house.
Fakhrul also said: “The people, BNP and Oikya Front have rejected the December 30 election’s results as widespread rigging had marred the polls.”
“The new government does not represent the people,” he said and reiterated the opposition’s call for the cancellation of the election results and another impartial election.
Later in the day, addressing a BNP rally at Rajpur union, Mirza Fakhrul claimed that at least 22 people, who had supported the opposition, were killed across the country during the Dec 30 election.
“The Awami League forcibly returned to power by using the state machinery. The people were not even allowed to cast their votes,” said the senior BNP leader.
