Eight killed in Cumilla road crashes

Representational imageAs many as eight people have been killed in separate road accidents on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Saturday (Jan 19), police said.
The incidents were reported from the Comilla’s Daudkandi and Burichong Upazilas and near the Cantonment.
In Daudkandi, two people died in a collision involving three vehicles in the Upazila’s Iliatganj area.
The deceased were Fahad Ali Raji Faisal, a supervisor of Green Line service and son of Kaikobad, a resident of Lalbagh area in Sadar Dakkhin Upazila and Monoar Hossain, a bus helper and son of Idris Mia of Manikganj district town.
Iliatganj police outpost Inspector Monirul Islam said the accident took place when a Dhaka-bound Green Line bus rammed into a covered van from behind on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at around 5:30am.
Within moments, a speeding truck, running behind the bus, hit it, killing Fahad on the spot. Monoar was critically injured.
He succumbed to his injuries while being taken to a hospital.
In another incident in Daudkandi, three people including a woman were killed after a bus ran over the women and subsequently fell into a roadside ditch at around 2:30pm in Gouripur Bus Stand area.
Two of the bus passengers drowned there.
Two deceased were identified as Nurunnahar, wife of Khirul Mollah of Gopchar, and Md Sumon, son of Sharif Ali of Kushiara. Both hailed from Daudkand Upazila.
Daudkandi police OC Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the deaths.
In Burichang, two people were killed after a private car hit a tree as it driver lost control over steering at around 12:30pm in the upazila’s Corepai area.
The deceased are Humayun Kabir, son of Motiar Rahman of Ashekpur area of Sadar Upazila, and Mojibur Rahman, son of Ashek Ali of Takurtukur area. Both hailed from Tangail district.
In Comilla Cantonment area, a highway police wrecker ran over a woman at around 1pm on its way to recover another accident-hit vehicle.
Mainamati highway police OC Mahabubur Rahman confirmed the deaths.
