‘Drug peddler’ killed in Mymensingh ‘shootout’

An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Mymensingh in what the police describe as a shootout.
The incident was reported around 1.45am on Wednesday from the district’s Sadar upazila, said police.
The victim has been identified as Sumon Mia, 27.
“Acting on a tip-off, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a raid at Shambhuganj Charpuliamari area near to Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway in the early hours on Wednesday. Sensing the presence of law enforcing men, a group of drug peddlers hurled brickbats and opened fire at police. In self defence police fired back to them and the group left the scene. Later, Sumon Mia’s bullet hit body found on the spot” said local OC Shah Kamal Akand.
“Sumon Mia was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead,” OC Akand added.
Two police constables, Elias and Ranaul Islam, were injured during the shootout, he added.
Police recovered 4 kgs of hemp and ten shells of bullet from the scene.
Sumon Mia was listed criminal at least 10 cases, police claimed.
