Khagaura in Habiganj is a border touching village which features several water bodies that provided income for the people; however, a feud between two groups, Showkot and Abdur Rahim groups, over the control of the water bodies, resulted in a death and destruction of homesteads. Now the people are almost without a livelihood.
The income from the water bodies is huge and is used for the development of the village.
The earning from the water-bodies is kept in the village fund and, reportedly, there was an embezzlement of around Tk. 2.15 million from the fund. This resulted in case and counter case by two groups.
This animosity led to clashes involving two sides which ended with the death of one Junaed Mia and injury of thirty others.
It’s believed that Juaned was killed by one group led by Showkot.
Meanwhile, families of both Showkot and Abdur Rahim claimed they were threatened by the other side.
Bahubal upzila UNO, Rafiqul Islam, said: “The dispute is long standing and despite our best efforts reconciliation remains elusive.”
