Bangladesh bagged its first gold medal through the hands of Dipu Chakma in the 13th South Asian Games in Kathmandu, Nepal on Monday (Dec 2).
Dipu won Gold in the 29+ age category in poomsae event of taekwondo at Satdobato Sports Complex, beating athletes from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and hosts Nepal.
Dipu from Rangamati scored 16.24 points with 8.28 in the opening round and 7.96 in the second round. Lakshman Ilandarige of Sri Lanka scored 8.22 to win silver while Gangphung Gangsa of India won bronze with 8.14 points.
Bangladesh won three golds in taekwondo in SA Games before. Since the sport included in the Games in 1999, Mizanur Rahman won first gold in Colombo 2006 while Sharmin Rumi and Shammi Akter won two golds in Dhaka 2010.
Bangladesh had earlier won three bronzes in taekwondo on Monday.
