Tea Bangladesh 217 for 7 (Das 14*, Wagner 4-35) v New Zealand

Tamim IqbalNew Zealand, particularly Neil Wagner, made it a difficult afternoon session for Bangladesh after a delightful morning at Seddon Park. The visitors went to tea on 217 for 7, with five wickets coming in the second session. Tamim Iqbal's fall was a key moment in the day, after he guided Colin de Grandhomme to Kane Williamson at slip, having made 126.

Wagner's relentless short-ball barrage got the better of Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan. Soumya Sarkar, batting at No. 4, was also undone by a short ball although he only had to move his hands away from the Tim Southee delivery, but it kissed the gloves on the way to a catch, reports espncricinfo.

Tamim was the fifth wicket to fall, but only after he'd reached his first overseas hundred since 2010, and his ninth overall. He burst through the 90s with boundaries off Southee before bringing up his century with a cut past point off Wagner. Tamim went on the attack soon afterwards, hooking Southee for a six and a four in a big over for Bangladesh.

After he fell, Mahmudullah was enterprising in his strokeplay, particularly with his cover drives, but whenever Wagner pitched it short, and it was often, Bangladesh's stand-in captain looked in doubt.

Mehidy fell in the last over before tea, unable to keep the Wagner short ball down, giving short leg a low catch.

Tamim had earlier struck a staggering 15 boundaries as he reached 86 at lunch, not holding back on anything too full on his legs or too wide to free his arms. But he was careful, too, as he remained cautious particularly against Wagner's barrage of short balls. His only moment of weakness was an uppish drive off Colin de Grandhomme in the 18th over, but he survived as the bowler failed to hang on to a simple return catch.

Tamim's fifty came off 37 balls halfway through the session as he tried his best to ease the conditions for the batsmen at the other end. Trent Boult got one past Shadman Islam's closed bat-face and Mominul Haque, who had struck a well-timed six over the slips, fell to a Wagner' short ball five minutes before the lunch break when he gloved one down the leg side to the keeper. He added 64 with Tamim for the second wicket.
