JP's Milon retracts decision to pull out of mayor race

Jatiya Party's Dhaka South mayor candidate has retracted his decision to pull out of the polls, hours after announcing to back Awami League's candidate Sheikh Falze Noor Taposh.
Millon was expected to withdraw his candidacy at the office of Dhaka' returning officer on Thursday (Jan 9).
"We are pulling out our candidate and backing [AL's] Tapos in the Dhaka South city polls as the ruling party extends its support to the JP candidate in the Rangpu-3 by-elections," JP Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga told Bangla Tribune before taking u-turn nearly an hour later.
"JP will contest in the polls and our activists will campaign till the end," he said.
Elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will be held on Jan 30 with voters to cast their ballot using electronic voting machines (EVMs).
According to the EC, the two city corporations have as many as 5,403,099 voters — 3,035,611 in DNCC and 2,367,488 in DSCC — to cast their votes in the elections.
There are 1,394 poll centres with 7,516 voting room in DNCC while 1,124 poll centres with 5,998 voting rooms in DSCC.
Along with electing the mayors, DNCC voters will also elect 54 ward councillors and 18 reserved women councillors while DSCC voters will elect 75 ward councillors and 25 reserved women councillors.
The JP is an ally in ruling AL-led Grand Alliance.
