Al Nahian Khan Joy and Lekhak Bhattacharya have been made president and general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) nearly four months after they were given the charge of acting leadership of the ruling Awami League’s student front.
Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the announcement at the reunion of the student organisation, which is marking its 72nd founding anniversary on Saturday (Dec 4).
The decision came after Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader urged Hasina to withdraw ‘acting’ from the top leaders’ designations.
“As the party’s general secretary has proposed to drop ‘acting’ from Chhatra League’s president and general secretary posts, they are now full-fledged as president and general secretary,” Hasina said while addressing the event.
Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and Golam Rabbani were removed as the BCL's president and general secretary late last year for their controversial activities and alleged corruption.
After the removal, Joy and Bhattacharjee have led the organization as its acting president and general secretary since Sept 14.
Shovon and Rabbani, however, were not invited to the reunion on Saturday.
