Amidst the hullabaloo over the AL conference, the new committee for Chhatra Dal was declared. A notice signed by the organisation’s president and general secretary said that soon, a full fledged committee would be formed. But the sixty member list has flabbergasted many Chhatra Dal workers.
They say that in forming the full committee, two rules out of eight were broken. Dal leaders say that through the direct election of Sept 19, Fazlur Rahman Khokon was elected president while Iqbal Hossain Shyamol was made the general secretary.
Then, on Dec 20, the number of members was increased. It was stated that BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has approved part of the committee.
As a result, at least ten members from the current committee feel they have been deprived from their right posts.
Reportedly, the Chhatra Dal members are worried about the political objectives of this committee.
The much debated committee of sixty members has come from London and one leader said: “As rules were followed strictly, married people were left out. As a result, many central leaders have been sidelined.”
There is a feeling that the basic rule that to get a place in the committee, a person must secure at least ten percent votes, has been breached.
Several leaders of Chhatra Dal’s DU branch said that those who were active during 1/11 were not evaluated.
Some leaders also claim that the list sent to London came back with many changes. Apparently supporters of Chhatra Dal president Fazlur Rahman Khokon were not given place in the new committee.
There are reports that that a syndicate in London misled Tarique Rahman and influenced his decision on the list.
