Major political party BNP and its alliance Jatiya Oikya Front did not attend the 21st National Council of Awami League.
They skipped the first day session of the council, which began at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Friday (Dec 20).
Central leadership will be elected in this two-day council of Awami League.
The Awami League invited all the political parties, who attended dialogue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina just before the 14th national election, to the council.
Both the BNP and Jatiya Oikya Front, where BNP is a key ally, were invited by its arch-rival, to attend the session.
Subrata Chowdhury, Gono Forum executive president and also Steering Committee member of Jatiya Oikya Front, said after holding a meeting, the front members decided not to attend the Awami League council considering the current political situation.
"Top leaders of the Oikya Front, including Dr Kamal Hossain and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, have decided not to attend the council," he said.
