Former foreign minister and BNP leader M Morshed Khan has resigned from his post as a party vice-chairman.

He sent his resignation letter through a personal aide to the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters on Tuesday (Nov 5) which according to sources was received by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

In his letter, Morshed Khan mentioned “personal reason” for his resigning from the party.

"I have resigned due to personal reasons. After thinking long and hard, I've come to the conclusion that I have nothing more to contribute to the party. Therefore I've resigned from the party," Morshed wrote in his resignation letter.

Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that he hasn’t received the letter yet.

“I heard about Morshed Khan’s resignation from various places but haven’t received the letter yet,” he told Bangla Tribune.

According to party sources, Morshed Khan was irked as he was deprived of party nomination in 11th National Election.

Born in Chattogram on August 8, 1940, Morshed’s political career started with the Jatiya Party, where he was the treasurer. He became a JP lawmaker in 1986.

When the BNP was in power from 1991 to 1996, Morshed left the JP and joined the BNP. During that time, he was made a special envoy to then prime minister Khaleda Zia.

Subsequently, he became a member of the advisory council and vice-chairman of the party.

Morshed was elected in the 6th, 7th and 8th parliamentary elections with BNP tickets from Chattogram.

He became the foreign minister after he was elected in the 8th national election held in 2001.
