Bimal BiswasLawmaker Rashed Khan Menon-led Workers Party of Bangladesh has expelled its former general secretary Bimal Biswas.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the party's central committee by a majority on Saturday (Oct 26), said Quamrul Ahasan, a politburo member.
The expulsion came four days after Bimal quit Workers Party on the ideological ground on Oct 22.
A two-time general secretary (GS), Bimal, however, called the expulsion worthless saying he has already left the party.
Bimal, who was also a politburo member, withdrew his primary membership of the party prior to the party’s 10th congress scheduled to be held in the capital on Nov 2 to 5.
In a letter to the party’s central committee, Bimal tendered his resignation stating that the party has deviated from its ideals of Marxism and Leninism.
He also criticised the party’s decision of joining the Awami League-led alliance claiming it was only to make way to the alliance government’s cabinet.
Bimal, however, sees the expulsion is somewhat a blow on the practice of the democracy in the party.
"I have left the party exercising my democratic rights. It seems they (party leaders) don't want me to do so," he told Bangla Tribune on Saturday.
Dismissing Bimal's allegations, Quamrul said, "At the meeting, the party rejected Biamal's letter for withdrawing his primary membership and then decided to expel him."
Quamrul claimed Bimal previously announced to form a party along with the leaders who will leave Workers Party before the next congress.
"It proves he [Bimal[ is involved in a conspiracy to split the party. He has clearly violated the party discipline." Quamrul added.
Another politburo members Iqbal Kabir Jahid said when the issue of Bimal placed at the meeting several leaders said it's not necessary to expel someone after s/he quits the party.
"But the majority of the central committee opposed it [and decided to expel Bimal]," he added.
