Leaders of the Jatiya Oikya Front, an opposition alliance, are pictured during the announcement of their manifesto ahead of the 11th general election, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, December 17, 2018. REUTERSWhile  BNP leaders express their pride in unity within the Jatiya Oikya Front, leaders of other constituents think otherwise. They say that BNP ignores the front.

This became clear at the one year anniversary event of the front held on Sunday (Oct 13), where only one BNP standing committee member was present.

However,  the BNP refutes the allegation, claiming they do not  'ignore' the front.

One day ago, BNP held a mourning rally near the central office at Paltan and the presence of Oikya Front members at that programme was scant.

Front leaders allege that BNP was active during the 11th National Parliamentary Election, but post-election, their involvement has come down to almost zero.

The executive president of Gano Forum and Oikya Front steering committee member advocate Subrata Chowdhury said: “Many BNP activists were arrested from a rally held on Oct 12 and that’s possibly the reason why BNP presence on the ground was low.”

Before the 11th National Parliamentary Election, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Dr Khondokar Mosharraf Hossain, barrister Moudud Ahmed used to attend front meetings.

But later, they mostly kept away from the programmes.

BNP joint secretary general Moazzem Hossain said: “I could not go to the programme as I came to Naogaon; others could not take part at the mourning rally organized by Oikya Front as they were busy with the countrywide rally.”

In the future, the presence of BNP members at Oikya Front events would be more noticeable, he assured.
