The BNP has come down hard on the government over the reported gold scam in the central bank’s vault.
“A national daily reported a rather unusual incident in Bangladesh Bank’s vault, where 963 kg of gold are being kept. The gold bars have been turned into mixed metals while the 22 carat gold into 18 carat one in the vault,” senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told a discussion on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Youth Forum arranged the event at the Jatiya Press Club on the role of the current Election Commission (EC).
A member of BNP’s policymaking National Standing Committee, Hossain called the government to take steps against the perpetrators.
“The US FBI has concluded that Bangladesh Bank officials and high-ups in the administration were involved in 2016 central bank reserve heist. And that’s why the government did not make the probe report public,” he said.
The cyber heist and gold scam are signs of plundering by the government, said Hossain.
Describing the chief election commissioner as an Awami League leader, he said, “No one believes that this Commission can hold a fair and credible election.”
