The 20-party Alliance, led by the BNP, has decided to back and campaign single mayor candidates in the city polls to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal slated for Jul 30.
The decision came on Wednesday from a meeting of the coalition partners, said BNP National Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan.
“Leaders have agreed to back single candidates in the polls. The 20-party Alliance will float a single candidate in the three cities,” Khan, who serves as the coalition’s coordinator, told the media after the meeting.
The Jamaat-e-Islami, which is in the coalition, has announced its candidate for the polls in Sylhet while the BNP nominated incumbent mayor Ariful Haque Chowdury.
Replying a query whether the coalition will back Jamaat’s candidate, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media briefing that it was yet to be finalised.
“The deadline for withdrawing nomination is yet to end. We have said that the coalition will campaign for single. You will be informed once a decision on the Jammat candidate issue made. But the 20-party Alliance has backed BNP’s candidate for Sylhet,” he said.
