FILE PHOTOThe ruling Awami League has appointed Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, the BNP leader who switched sides before the national election, as its adviser.
Party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appointed her on Sunday (Jul 7), said a statement sent to the media by Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap.
With the latest inclusion, the number of advisors to the Awami League stands at 41.
Weeks before the 11th national election, Chowdhury, who served as a vice-chairman of the BNP, meet Hasina on Dec 19 at her Ganabhaban residence and joined the Awami League.
The former bureaucrat was hoping to get the BNP’s ticket from the Sylhet-1 parliamentary seat but was later left out.
A member of the BNP chief’s Advisory Council in the party’s last committee, he was made a vice-chairman when the current one was formed.
He was vocal for the BNP in different fora, but not a common face in party programmes.
Police had detained him during the BNP’s anti-government movement in 2013.
After retirement, Chaudhury joined the BNP in 1999 before the party won the 2001 election.
The BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami government made him chairman of the Privatisation Commission with the rank of state minister after the election.
