BNP picks GM Siraj for Bogura by-polls

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir handing over the letter allotting the party symbol.The BNP has nominated its Bogura district unit’s Convener GM Siraj as its candidate to the by-polls for parliamentary seat in the northern district.
On Sunday (Jun 2), Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir wrote to the Election Commission to allot the party symbol ‘paddy sheaf’ in the race to the Bogura-6 seat, which was vacated after the he refused to take his oath to office.
“GM Siraj has received the secretary general’s letter, allotting him the party symbol, which he will file to the returning officer,” Shaherul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP chief’s media wing, told Bangla Tribune.
On Apri 30, the parliamentary seat was declared vacant as Fakhrul did not to take oath of office though he was elected MP from the constituency in the Dec 30 election.
The by-polls to the Bogura-6 constituency will be held on Jun 24.
As per the by-polls schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination paper is May 23, while the date for scrutinising nomination paper is May 27 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is June 3.
The eight-hour balloting period will begin at 9am instead of 8am in the by-election while Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used in all the polling stations of the constituency.
