Jatiya Oikya Front and allies are furious at BNP’s decision to join parliament after rejecting the result of the 11th National Parliamentary Elections.
With a schism in the alliance, there is much speculation about the future of the front while many have expressed skepticism about the future of the front.
One senior leader of the front, said, “BNP cannot decide on its policy and joined parliament at the decision of Tarique Rahman.”
Reportedly, there is discontent in the Oikya Front as BNP did not consult with anyone before joining parliament.
Oikya Front steering committee member and General Secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Abdul Malek Ratan, has termed BNP’s decision as ‘treachery’.
We cannot jeopardise the drive for democracy, voting rights and movement for progression due to the acquiescence of BNP, he said, adding, “Our Oikya Front will survive, if someone wants to go out of the alliance we won’t stop them.”
Convener of Nagorik Oikya, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, said, “I will make some observations after understanding the whole situation.”
Oikya Front steering committee member, Dr Zahed ur Rahman, said, “BNP’s position has gone against the will of the people.”
A reliable source from BNP says that Oikya Front will survive but a new strategy will be formulated.
A platform is being discussed with Dr. Kamal Hossain, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Oli Ahmed with BNP’s Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as spokesperson and Mahmudur Rahman Manna.
Amir of Khelafat Majlish, an ally of the Oikya Front, commented: “I am surprised by BNP’s approach, their actions are incongruous with their rhetoric.”
They take one decision and then a directive from London changes everything, he deplored.
Chairman of Kalyan Party, another ally of the front, major general (retd) Ibrahim Bir Pratik, observes, “With the joining of BNP members to parliament, the incident has taken a sudden turn, leaving us baffled.”
We cannot call the joining legal but BNP’s sudden mode won’ break the alliance and new pacts will emerge in one and a half year, added the former military person.
