The government has failed to tackle cyclone Fani as it lacked any effective no disaster management plan, says the BNP.
After killing at least 12 people in India’s Odisha, Fani swung north-eastwards into Bangladesh on Saturday where four more people died although more than a million had been moved to safety.
“Fani has killed so far 15 people. They were not supposed to die. Thousands of people have been taken to cyclone shelter centre, where there was no arrangement for food,” said BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday.
Rizvi was speaking at a party progamme at its Nayapaltan headquarters in the city. BNP’s labourer affiliate Tanti Dal organised the token hunger strike programme demanding release of
jailed party chief Khaleda Zia.
Speaking at the event, the senior BNP leader urged the party leaders and activists to take the street to free Khaleda from jail.
“If the government does not release her [Khaleda] we have to take to street,” said Rizvi before alleging that authoritarian now rules the country.
Expressing concerning over Khaleda’s life, Rizvi urged the government to free her from prison.
“We fear for her [Khaleda] life in jail because of her illness. We asks the government to release her from jail,” he added.
