Though the BNP high command is strict in preventing the oath taking of winning candidates of the 11th national parliamentary election, the four winners are indecisive. Till Apr 27 midnight, they could not decide what they will do. One candidate says that due to pressure from a certain quarter, they are facing a quandary.
On Apr 25 afternoon, Jahidur Rahman, went to the parliament and despite the efforts of the BNP high command to contact him, Jahid went against the party’s wishes and took oath.
This act of defiance has reportedly jolted BNP. Political analyst, Professor Emazuddin Ahmed, says, “I don’t know what to say, let’s see what the party decides.”
In view of the development, a meeting was held at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office with Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Khondokar Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Amir Khasru Mahmud and others. Party’s acting chairperson, Tarique Rahman, joined via Skype from London.
The lawyers were called to discuss possible ways to prevent oath taking. They were asked to find out legal avenues to settle the matter.
The six winning BNP candidates are: Harun Ur Rashid from Chapainawabganj-3, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Bogura-6, Aminul Islam, Chapainawabganj-2, Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan, Brahmanbaria-2, Mosharraf Hossain, Bogura-4, Jahidur Rahman, Thakurgaon-3.
Meanwhile, one member of the BNP standing committee, says, “Those taking oath against party decision will be expelled.”
As per clause 70 of the constitution, membership of Jahidur Rahman cannot be canceled because BNP is not in parliament.
One senior leader said that Gayeshwar Chandra Roy has been asked to persuade elected four leaders apart from Mirza Fakhrul to refrain from taking oath.
