BNP briefs diplomats on Khaleda’s health

The 73-year-old former prime minister was admitted to the BSMMU with pain in joints of her hands and legs, and diabetes on Monday (Apr 1).The BNP has briefed the diplomats on its incarcerated chief Khaleda Zia’s health condition which they claim is deteriorating since she went to prison.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir briefed the representatives of around 16 countries on Thursday (Apr 5).
“We fear that the government’s aim to is to put the former prime minister’s life at risk,” he said.
He added that under Bangladesh’s Constitution, Khaleda is entitled to bail and standard health treatment.
Fakhrul said that not only was she not being given proper medical care her situation was “a clear and premeditated violation of human rights.”
The party’s policymaking National Standing Committee and Foreign Affairs Committee members were present during the one and half hour meeting.
In addition to informing the diplomats on Khaleda’s declining health and new symptoms, Fakhrul talked about the political influence on the doctors who are responsible for her treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and BNP’s belief that rejection of her bail is politically motivated.
Saying that Khaleda was recently suffering from problems in her kidneys, he added, “Her health has already been damaged.”
Representatives of several states including USA, UK, United Arab Emirates, China, Germany, France, Turkey, Egypt, Japan, Australia, Canada, Spain, Myanmar, Pakistan, Kuwait and the United Nations were present at the briefing, said a Foreign Affairs Committee member.
“We regularly meet the diplomats and brief them on everything,” Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon who is a member of the committee told Bangla Tribune.
