The government has panicked in the year of the election and launched a so-called war on drugs to shift the spotlight, says the BNP.
Speaking at a discussion by senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said claimed that the drug problem did not become an epidemic suddenly.
“It did not happen a month or six months ago. Since the government took office, MPs, minister and party leaders have patronised it and now it has taken a severe turn,” said the BNP National Standing Committee member.
He made clear that the BNP was not against the crackdown on drugs, but has reservation over the method. “Drug dealers should be arrested and face justice. They can provide evidences against the godfathers.”
Claiming that everyone knows, who controls the trade, the BNP leader said, “The PM’s special adviser has even said that the ‘druglord is in parliament’.”
According to him, the anti-drug operation should aim to get to the root of the trade, not just detaining and killing the petty dealers.
