The law-enforcers’ recent war against drugs aims opposition activists, claims senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“We support anti-drug raids, but not a politically-motivated one. Killings cannot be a solution to the drug menace,” he told the media on Wednesday at his native Thakurgaon.
His remarks come amid rights bodies’ concerns over the recent killings of suspect drug dealers in what the law enforcers describe as shootouts, also referred as cross-fires.
At least 30 people have been killed in the last eight days during anti-drug raids in different districts of Bangladesh.
“We had said that they need to be brought to justice. But the arguments, defending extra judicial killings, are not admissible in any civilized and democratic nation,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul.
Reiterating that the BNP will not take part in the elections with Chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail, he said, “There’s no democracy in this country. The people have no rights.”
