Jamaat leaders

Detectives arrested top 6 leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami including its Ameer Maqbul Ahmad, Nayeb-e-Ameer Mia Ghulam Parwar and Secretary-General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman from capital’s Uttara on Monday evening.

Earlier on September 29 police arrested more leaders and activists of this party. As a result, almost all the top leaders of Jamaat's were detained in just 10 days.

Reliable sources of two intelligence agencies of government said they were conducting agility to arrest Jamaat leaders for more than one month. However, they did not expect that they will get the chance to arrest these top leaders together.

According to the sources, there are several cases against each of the detained Jamaat leaders. Very soon they will be shown as arrested in those cases. Among them, a case may be filed against Amir Maqbul Ahmad for crimes against humanity in the liberation war of 71.

Jamaat Nayeb-e-Amir Mujibur Rahman has called for nationwide demonstrations on Tuesday against the arrest of their leaders. In his statement, he alleged ‘The police arrested the leaders of the party, including the party's Amir, unjustly during a private meeting led by party chief this evening.’

Before this, on 29 June 2010, already executed (for crime against humanity) Jamaat leader Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and Delwar Hossain Sayeedi who was sentenced lifetime jail for the same reason were arrested together. After that, several persons performed the job of acting chief and secretary general of the party in the past 6 years.  Maqbul Ahmad was elected Ameer (Chief) on October 17 last year.

The arrest of the top Jamaat leaders and activists has created panic and frustration among the activists. According to the party sources, the death of Golam Azam and executions of Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Muhammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Kader Mullah created leadership crisis in the party. Yet, after overcoming various obstacles in the past six years, many activists were being organized silently under the leadership of the new committee. One year the party decided to stay away from mainstream politics. But detainment of new committee chief Maqbul Ahmad and other leaders has put Jamaat again into leadership crisis and frustration.

One of the responsible party officials of Chittagong division said, ‘Obviously the random detainment of the leaders has made the activists disappointed and nervous.’

Central working committee member Ridwanullah Shahdee said, ‘Detainment, arrest, and remand are not new for Jamaat. Internally, the party is much more organized than before.’

According to sources, after the arrest of central leaders, the central executive council will call an emergency meeting. Based on the opinion of the maximum number of members, this council will decide the acting (Ameer) chief and acting secretary very quickly.

The Jamaat has always been alleged that the government has arrested their top leaders only to create leadership crisis.
