In an effort to put an end to speculations of its two MPs-elect taking oaths to their offices, Gano Forum has said in a statement that its previous decision to not join the parliament stands.
General Secretary Mostofa Mohsin Montu said in a statement sent to the media late on Monday (Jan 28) that none of the MPs-elect of the Jatiya Oikya Front, including Gano Forum’s Sultan Md Monsur and Mokabbir Khan, are not taking oath as lawmakers to the 11th National Parliament.
Describing media reports on Gano Forum members’ oath-taking as “untrue and baseless”, Montu said in the statement that the party has not decided to join the parliament and the previous decision of Oikya Front stands.
“The Jatiya Oikya Front was formed to restore the people’s right to vote through a free, fair and credible election. The coalition remains united,” it reads.
The Awami League has won 257 seats in the Dec 30 election and formed the government for a third straight term. The BNP and its allies, including the Gano Forum led by Dr Kamal Hossain, won only eight seats.
Gan Forum’s Sultan Md Mansur ran under the paddy sheaf symbol on to win the Moulvibazar-2 seat while Mukabbir Khan ran under the rising sun of his party to win the Sylhet-2 constituency.
The BNP candidates who won are Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in Bogura-6, Mosharraf Hossain in Bogura-4, Zahidur Rahman in Thakurgaon-3, Aminul Islam in Chapainawabganj-2, Harun-ur-Rashid in Chapainawabganj-3 and Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan in Brahmanbaria-2.
The Jatiya Oikya Front, which includes the BNP, has boycotted the results of the polls and has called for a new election. Its MPs-elect have not taken their oaths since the Election Commission rejected their calls.
